With the news that pre-departure tests for travellers to England are now scrapped, demand for international holidays are suddenly skyrocketing.

The relaxation of travel rules seen a surge in UK residents booking their personal slice of paradise after a long travel hiatus. But where are people planning to visit?

We looked at the survey data from travel trade organisation, ABTA, who have revealed the top ten destinations that people from the UK are planning to visit this year.

  • Europe

Details

1) Spain

Of course, the sun-drenched shores of Spain have long been a mainstay for Brits. Cultural cities like Barcelona and Madrid offer unique exploration opportunities while many of us will opt for an indulgent all-inclusive resort, complete with enormous pools and cocktails brought right to your sun lounger - bliss. The Canary Islands are always popular, boasting blissful year round sunshine and very little rainfall.

2) USA

The United States has always had a 'special' relationship with the UK, so it's unsurprising that people are flocking back to explore places like New York, Los Angeles, Vegas and Florida. Visitors to the States also have a chance to explore the breathtaking US national parks which are easily some of the most spectacular landscapes on the planet.

3) France

Just across the Channel, France offers a cornucopia of delights for travellers. The elegant beaches of Saint-Tropez, the romantic streets of Paris or the wine regions of Bordeaux, Burgandy and Champagne. You'll eat and drink to your heart's content, wake up and do it all over again.

4) Italy

UK travellers need little to no encouragement to lust after cities like Rome, Venice and Florence. It's also not a stretch to imagine that at the very top of people's lists for 2022 is a long holiday in Italy spent driving by the scenic vineyards of Tuscany, Piedmont or Sicily, which incidently contains the most vineyards of any Italian region.

5) Greece

Sunshine, olives, plush resorts and secluded islands: Greece has it all. The birthplace of modern civilisation, Greece is home to 6,000 islands, so can you ever really tire of exploring here?

Escape the world in the island paradise of Santorini, Crete, Corfu or, if you want something more lively, head to Mykonos, the Greek version of Ibiza.

6) Portugal

Egg tarts, colourful Azulejo tiles and the sweet port wine: Portugal is a destination full of flavour, vibrancy and colour!

Beach lovers are sorted with the delightful Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, while the cultural capital of Lisbon and the nearby Palace of Sintra fill your cultural quota.

7) Germany

Germany has a reputation for offering a huge variety of incredible scenery, from the historical capital of Berlin to its fairytale castles in the Black Forest. Revel in the traditional beer halls of Bavaria - just remember a stein is a litre! Well-preserved cities like Cologne, Nuremburg and Rothenburg also offer a medieval charm unchanged for many hundreds of years.

8) Australia

We've got our fingers crossed that our mates down under decide to open up their borders to UK travellers soon, the current signs are promising. Australia's blend of vineyards, perfect beaches and trendy cities makes it ideal for any visitor. Western Australia offers a road less travelled, but many still opt for the classic cities like surfer's fave Sydney, too cool for school Melbourne and Queensland bustling capital Brisbane.

9) Canada

With its heady offering of wilderness trails (complete with bears) unbelievably friendly locals (including bears) and great food and drink (poutine anyone?) the Great White North is a proper adventure. Head to the Canadian rockies and Jasper National Park for some mountain fun, enjoy the French influenced Montreal and its 17th-century architecture and Québec for its UNESCO World Heritage old town.

10) Turkey

The cities of Turkey, particularly Istanbul, teem with history, great wonders of the world and architectural marvels. Turkey is surrounded by three seas: the Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean to the south and the Aegean Sea to the west: it's pretty easy to see why beach resorts are popular here. Quaint fishing villages line the coast, and lush resorts let you soak in the turquoise sea - Bodrum, Antalya and Patara offer some of the finest places to soak up a few weeks of sun, sand, and sea.
