What are Slovakia hotels like to stay in?

Because Slovakia has a less well-developed tourist industry compared to its neighbours, such as Austria and the Czech Republic, some people think its hotels are poor. This could not be further from the truth, however. In fact, Slovakia has some superb accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. There are hostels in most of the big cities, which would suit backpackers intent on hiking as well as enjoying some urban fun. There are also spa and boutique hotels in Slovakia, along with more mid-range accommodations.

If you would like to stay in a modern hotel with convenient access facilities, such as lifts, then book a ski resort holiday. In places like Banská Bystrica or Prešov, you will find modern accommodation that's smart and affordable. In the summer, such hotels are relatively cheap, although they will tend to suit those who like to holiday in the great outdoors.

In some of the older towns and cities of Slovakia, the accommodation tends to be more traditional. Older Slovakia hotels in Bratislava or Košice, for instance, are full of charm and often very comfortable. Check that the rooms are air-conditioned if you intend on travelling in the summer months. Another good tip when staying in older Slovakia hotels is to confirm the availability of Wi-Fi. Most offer this, but some don't, so it is worth checking.

Are family package holidays to Slovakia worth it?

As a landlocked country, Slovakia isn't somewhere to head for a family beach holiday. That said, the country offers plenty to do with children. Active families will enjoy the many parks in the country, some of which offer activity centres. Booking kayaks and bicycles for getting around with the whole family is quite easy. In many cases, the hotel you are staying in will provide all the local information you need.

The UFO observation deck is a fun place to visit with children. You have to pay to go in, and you cannot book in advance. A small lift takes you up to the top, where the cityscape views are astounding.

Is Slovakia a cheap destination for a getaway?

Yes, Slovakian prices are low compared to countries like Italy, Germany and France. Slovakia uses the euro as its currency, so you won't notice large exchange rate advantages. However, the euros you spend tend to go further. Take cash if you are going to be spending money in more rural locations. Generally speaking, though, dining out and buying drinks is cheaper than in many other parts of Europe.

In bars and restaurants, locals tend to round their bills up to the nearest euro. However, there is some expectation in tourist areas that a 10% tip will be offered. Bear this in mind when paying, but check that a service charge hasn't already been applied.
