Lake District hotels: Travel advice for booking Lake District holidays

The Lake District is one of England's most popular rural areas for a holiday. It might not have the high peaks of Snowdonia in Wales or the huge lochs of the Scottish Highlands. However, it does have a charm all of its own. There are few other parts of England that can match it for natural beauty. Find out more about booking a hotel in the Lake District and what a holiday there would usually entail.

Do you need a hotel in the Lake District?

There are plenty of accommodation options available in the Lake District. Larger settlements, like Keswick, Coniston and Bowness-on-Windermere, offer something for everyone. You can book a hotel in the Lake District at such locations, as well as holiday homes. Both get booked up quite quickly. Because hoteliers expect to sell out all of their rooms during the British school holidays, there are very few instances of last-minute reductions. If you want a bargain, look for last-minute Lake District lodge holidays. Lodges, like Lake District hotels, tend to be fully booked, but you can sometimes benefit from late cancellations.

Guesthouses are another option. These are basically small hotels in the Lake District with four or five guest rooms at most. You'll usually get breakfast in a Lake District guesthouse but no evening meals. Some establishments also run as pubs, though, so you can obtain an evening meal if you book one of those. Don't expect room service or a dedicated reception desk in these sorts of places, though.

Where are the best walks in the Lake District?

Beginners to hiking holidays will probably want a lakeside walk to help them get oriented to the Lake District. The Tarn Hows trail, near Coniston, is a good one because it follows the lake, but it isn't too long. Not only does it follow the shore, but you also wander through woodland without too many steep sections.

Featuring a rewarding climb with breathtaking views over Derwentwater, the Catbells trail is ideal for intermediate hikers. Pick it up at Keswick and find out whether fell walking is for you. This trail is longer, at about 3.5 miles. It's ideal for an afternoon stroll, but you should wear good boots.

Finally, ascending England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, is more challenging but highly rewarding. It takes just over six miles up steep inclines to get to the peak from Wasdale. Only take this one on if you have built up some stamina and experience in fell walking. Be prepared to turn back in poor weather. That said, it is a very satisfying hike.

Family activities for Lake District holidays

Lake District holidays are synonymous with the children's author Beatrix Potter among many who visit. She was inspired by the area, and there's a visitor centre devoted to her at Bowness-on-Windermere. Ideal for younger children, especially on a rainy day, it has a one-of-a-kind English charm.

Brockhole on Windermere is a good place to head to if you have active youngsters. Close to the town of Windermere, it features an adventure playground, mini-golf and ascendable treetop netting. You can hire boats to head out onto the lake here, too. At the Rheged Centre in Penrith, families will find another good bolthole on a rainy day. The centre offers workshops, soft play, a cinema and indoor climbing.

Is booking flights to the Lake District worth it?

There are no commercial airports located in the Lake District National Park. Consequently, it is only worth seeking out cheap flights to the Lake District if you are coming from a long way away. Carlisle Airport (CAX) is the closest, about 35 miles north of Keswick, but it doesn't offer passenger services. Manchester Airport (MAN) is the next closest. You will have to travel by train from Manchester to Oxenholme Lake District, which takes 75 minutes. Alternatively, hire a car and drive north on the M6. Ullswater, for example, is an hour and 45 minutes away by road, depending on traffic. Bear in mind that some of the rural roads in t

Advice on booking Lake District hotels outside the National Park

You can bring the price of Lake District holidays down by booking hotels outside the National Park area. Hotels in officially designated Lake District parkland typically charge more per room per night than those outside it. Cockermouth is generally a bit cheaper for all types of accommodation, for example. It is located to the west of the National Park, just on its edge, close to Bassenthwaite. The same applies to Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedburgh, both to the east of the district.

FAQs about Lake District holidays

Q: Which part of the Lake District is the best to stay?

Q: What month is best to visit the Lake District?
