Are you short on time and money - but itching to get away somewhere new? Extreme day trips have become very popular, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a winning combination: buy budget flights to a European destination, skip out on paying for accommodation, have an exhausting but exhilarating day out, and then fly back just in time to sleep in your own bed.
What’s even more enticing is that all this costs less than the price of a standard UK train journey. So, embrace spontaneity, save money and see somewhere new by booking one of our extreme day trip deals.
Ready to book an extreme day trip but not entirely sure how it works yet?
Unlike a regular day trip, where you pick somewhere relatively local to visit for the day, an extreme day trip involves catching a flight somewhere. The ‘extreme’ part is that you leave your home that morning and come back the same night.
The goal is for you to spend as much of the day as possible in your chosen destination, so you’ll need to catch an early morning flight out, with the return flight coming back in the early or late evening. The bits in between are totally up to you. Do some research beforehand on things to do and places to eat so that you can start exploring as soon as you leave the airport.
If you stick to budget airlines, you won’t have to spend much money
There’s no need to request much time off work
You won’t need to book accommodation
It’s a chance to scope out a destination and decide whether you’d book a longer holiday there
Satisfy your desire to travel without breaking up your normal routine too much
There are all sorts of extreme day trips you can take. You can book a solo, couples’ or group trip to a new city, you might chase adventure by choosing a destination with easy access to outdoor opportunities, or you may simply want to get to a beach.
Regardless of what you’d choose, you need to ensure a few things: make sure that your flight time is short, that it’s easy to get from the airport to the city/activity you have in mind, and that you can book early morning/late evening flights for that place.
With all this in mind, here are some of our favourite destinations for extreme day trips:
Flight time: Around 1 hour
Ireland’s capital city is full of things to do and see, plus it’s one of the most convenient destinations you can pick while still being able to have a lot of fun. Most airport-to-city transport options get you into central Dublin in 20 minutes. What’s more, the city’s major sights are grouped together; you can easily explore places like Trinity College, Temple Bar, Dublin Castle and more. Don’t forget to visit a pub or two to enjoy the famous Irish hospitality before flying back home.
Flight time: Up to 1h30
Paris is another classic choice, and you can see so much in a single day in this city. Airport transfers get you into the city in about 40 minutes or less. It should be noted that Paris is a vast capital city, so it’s easiest to pick a particular area/neighbourhood, and then see the sights that are clustered there. The Eiffel Tower and the Louvre are popular choices, plus you’ll find eateries everywhere in central Paris.
Flight time: Around 1h15
Whether for a longer stay or an extreme day trip, Amsterdam never disappoints. Filled with sights that are easily walkable, you can also get to the city centre from the airport in about 20 minutes. Dam Square, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House and the canals are all popular attractions in the centre. Don’t forget to try the food, though: stroopwaffels, bitterballen and poffertjes are all great for snacks on the move.
Flight time: Under 2 hours
For something a little different, head to Copenhagen for a day to remember. The city itself feels very compact, so you’ll be able to see so many sights within your daytime hours. Think Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, Christiansborg Palace and Tivoli Gardens (just check whether it’s open). Grab a coffee and one of the city’s world-renowned pastries, and prepare for a full day of exploring on foot. As a bonus, it only takes 15 minutes to get to the city from the airport.
Flight time: 1 hour
The Belgian capital is another go-to for an extreme day trip. It only takes 20 minutes to get to the city centre from the airport, and you’ll find Brussels to be very walkable and compact - ideal for speedy sightseeing. The Grand Place and Manneken Pis are quick to get to, and you won’t find any shortage of delicious things to eat. Frites, waffles, chocolate, beer and more; Brussels is a great option for food lovers.
Have you booked your extreme day trip already, or are you just about to? Make sure that you’re prepared for what will be an exhilarating, yet potentially exhausting travel experience.
Here are all of our top tips for making the most of your extreme day trip:
Go to bed early the night before - trust us, this is important! With a full night’s sleep, you’ll be setting yourself up for a much more enjoyable and energetic day.
Travel with hand luggage only to avoid delays or complications. You won’t need more than a backpack if you’re travelling solo.
Use offline maps; simply download maps on Google Maps beforehand so that you don’t have to depend on finding wifi or having local data.
Plan a realistic itinerary, and don’t book any activities! Flight/transport delays can happen, after all. Instead, choose 2-3 flexible things to do, and make sure that you know how easy it is to get between them.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring clothing layers.
Make sure that your phone is fully charged and bring along a phone charger or, even better, a small power bank to charge as you go.
