The best places to travel in September
1. Barcelona, Spain
Plan a city break in Barcelona for the end of summer to catch the beginning of one of Barcelona’s best seasons. The swarms of tourists looking for a Spanish holiday have started to dissipate and the streets become clearer and cooler as autumn lingers on the horizon. Pop over for a romantic trip for two to drink wine and hop between your favourite tapas spots as warm days fade into balmy, breezy evenings. Take advantage of the spectacular weather by taking a trip out of town to hike in nearby Montseny nature park and sneak in a last dip at Caldes d’Etrac (by October the water will start to cool here, but around this time and heading into November, wellness holiday seekers can visit the area’s thermal baths.) Added bonus: the annual La Merce street festival is on from September 20th to the 24th.
2. Lefkada, Greece
We've gone with Lefkada here thanks to September conditions making it perfect, but in reality, it's hard to land on just one Greek island —so why choose? Those with a little extra holiday time this September can hop between several islands during one of the area’s most temperate seasons. Gone are the holidaymakers of July and August, as families prepare to head back to school. Flit between the sailing paradise of Lefkada, the Insta-worthy views of Milos, and the winding trails of Rhodes. Soak up every last minute of the fantastic weather by packing olives, cheese, and wine for a picnic beachside and save sampling seafood for the cool evenings.
3. Marrakech, Morocco
Hot days give way to cool nights as Marrakech heads into September, leaving the almost unbearable weather of August behind. You can spend your days peeking in and out of the sun as you walk from colorful gardens to marbled palaces, and your evenings sipping drinks under the stars at a late-night cafe. Not to be missed: the tiled courtyards at Bahia Palace, fresh juice and heaping spices at Jemaa el_Fnaa market, the bright colors of the tanneries, and a dip in a hammam bath. With flights from many U.K. destinations under 4 hours, you can even make a trip to Morocco into a weekend getaway.
4. Sicily, Italy
This sprawling island at Italy’s southern point is gorgeous any time of year, but September offers a temperate weather that’s hard to come by in any other season. The weather is ideal for hiking, swimming, and city exploring. Adventurers can take a hike through Mount Etna’s craters or explore the Valley of the Temples, dating back to the 5th century B.C. Those looking for a quiet dip should head to San Vito lo Capo in the north to swim in dreamy turquoise waters. And urban explorers can round out a visit to the Monreale Cathedral in Palermo with coffee and cannoli as an afternoon snack.
5. The Caribbean
September is admittedly storm season in the Caribbean. However, that means that prices are lower than usual, so there are great deals to be had. The weather is usually great and most parts of the Caribbean remains dry throughout September. The Caribbean is made up of 28 nations and there are endless islands to explore. The lovely weather in September is also well suited to whatever activities you want to embark on, whether it's snorkelling, walking or just relaxing on the beach. Said beaches should be much less crowded too! The Dominican Republic offers a number of great value all inclusive options if you're on a budget.
Where can I get some late-summer sun in September?
Unlike in Winter, you don't necessarily have to travel far to get warm weather in September. You might even get lucky with a staycation break in the South of England, for example. But to be sure, head to Southern Europe for some more guaranteed sunny weather. September is much less busy that July and August, so you can even enjoy more space on the beaches! Here's our top 4 picks for some warm weather in September without having to travel half way across the world.
1. Puglia, Italy
The stunning Puglian coast of Italy makes for one of the best holidays in all of Italy and average temperatures are still 27c at the start of September. Fly to the University city of Bari before travelling south along the coast, taking in the stunning small towns and villages such as Polignano a mare or visiting the Trulli style houses in Alberobello. The best beaches can be found right on the southern tip by Gallipoli and Santa Maria de Leuca, while the most famous is perhaps the Baia Del Turchi in nearby Otranto.
2. Porto, Portugal
For a city break that still has a laid-back feel, heading to Porto in September is a great choice. The average temperature for September days is 24c, meaning things don't get to sweaty as you explore the beautiful city. The nearby Douro Valley provides an escape into some of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Portugal and is a must-do especially if you're on a romantic break with your partner. Whether you're wine tasting, visiting the lovely villages or taking a boat trip along the river, Porto and the Douro Valley make a perfect September break.
3. Athens, Greece
Temperatures can still reach 28c in Athens in September, but that's nothing compared to the sweltering heat of July and August. With so much to see and do here, visiting in a (slightly) cooler month makes sense. Take a guided tour of the Acropolis, visit the stunning Temple of Poseidon and the Theatre of Dionysus. There's so much history and culture to take in but it's also worth staying long enough for some day trips too. Why not take a boat trip around the nearby Saronic Islands or use the bus for a trip to the ancient town of Delphi?
4. Côte d’Azur, France
The south of France is a popular summer destination, but we particularly like visiting in September, with highs of 26c. Fly to Nice and enjoy a cosmopolitan couple of days before heading to the coastline. There are endless places to visit, so plan accordingly depending on how much time you have. Saint-Tropez and Cannes are two of the best larger destinations, but we recommend visiting some of the cute villages too, like Èze or Sainte-Agnès. If it's beaches you're after, you won't be disappointed. Check out Plage de la Bocca in Cannes, La Plage d'Eze close to Nice or Plage de la Salis in Antibes.
