Information on Granada flights

It takes at least 4.5 hours to fly from the UK to Granada, and this does not factor in the waiting time between flights. Despite the need to change flights, the relatively short total flight time makes Granada suitable for family holidays if you have young children.

Things to do in Granada

Before exploring options for flights to Granada, it makes sense to build up a list of things you want to see and do in the city. In the following sections, you'll find some inspiration and get a sense of the most significant tourist attractions and places of interest that help to define Granada holidays.

Visit the Alhambra medieval fortress

The Alhambra is a medieval palace complex and fortress combining Islamic and Spanish Renaissance architectural features. It's one of the country's most popular tourist attractions and a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the most notable structures within the complex include the Palace of the Lions and the Partal Palace.

Visitors can access the site on any day of the week, with opening hours from 8 AM to 6 PM and extended opening hours from April until October. Guided tours of the complex are an ideal option for solo holidays, and some parts of the complex are also available for night visits, making it easy to squeeze into your itinerary at a time that suits you.

Explore the historic Albaicín neighbourhood

All good holidays to Granada will allocate some time to take in the Albaicín neighbourhood, situated on the north side of the Darro River. It's well-known for its historical monuments and for the fact that the streets have largely retained the layout they had during the medieval period.

The neighbourhood is now part of an extended UNESCO World Heritage Site in Granada and offers a variety of museums, including the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum of Granada. Other significant places of interest in Albaicín include the city walls, the Gate of Elvira, which dates back to the 11th century, and a dozen churches.

Take a road trip to nearby Guadix

If you have time, consider a road trip to the nearby city of Guadix. The city is located around 40 minutes northeast of Granada and can be accessed by bus, train or car. The city's heritage includes Phoenician and Roman influences, and it's located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Some of the main attractions include the Alcazaba, which is an old fortress that dominates the city's skyline, as well as Guadix Cathedral, which is a great example of how Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture can combine. A simple day trip should be enough to take in the main sights and get a sense of the city's culture.

Experience the Fiesta de las Cruces

If you can time your Granada holiday to coincide with the beginning of May, you'll get to experience Fiesta de las Cruces (Festival of the Crosses). Although celebrated in various Hispanic regions, Granada's celebrations are renowned for being among the best.

The celebrations take place every year and include dancing in the streets and decorations throughout the city. Crosses are adorned with carnations, and bars are set up to serve tapas and drinks. Despite the religious origins of the festival, it feels like an unmistakably Spanish celebration, which visitors are welcome to join.
