Your travel guide to Salou holidays: Tips and advice

Take a look at some of our exceptional deals for flights to Salou and package holidays in the resort town. Popular with many tourists from northern Europe, not just the UK, Salou hotels are well-appointed and comfortable. Check out all-inclusive deals and other accommodation options when booking a holiday to Salou.

Why book Salou holidays?

To begin with, Salou is packed with tourist-ready accommodation. This means that the resort often has competitively priced hotel rooms to suit all kinds of holidaymakers. If your idea of a good holiday is sun, sand and swimming pools, then consider a holiday to Salou. Located on the east coast of Spain, most hotels in Salou are a short walking distance from the beach. Some even offer sea views, too.

There are two blue flag beaches in Salou: Llevant Beach and Capellans Beach. This means you can expect cleanliness and a relaxing atmosphere. That said, watersports are on offer at both these beaches, so there is something for everyone. If you prefer being active, then the stunning Camí de Ronda coastal path will be worth exploring.

Salou also has some top places to eat and drink. Noted for its lively nightlife with many beachfront venues, the resort isn't overrun with revellers. As such, it is a place you can enjoy, whether you head there with friends, as a family group or as a couple. With around 300 sunshine days in the average year, it is little wonder Salou hotels get booked by tourists who return again and again.

Are hotels in Salou child-friendly?

It is fair to say that Salou has many child-friendly establishments. However, not all hotels in Salou are as geared up to meet the needs of kids as others. Some cater to younger adults and people on all-inclusive deals, which might not suit all families, especially those with toddlers. Finding out whether a hotel in Salou has good facilities for kids takes no time, though. There's no need to book an unsuitable hotel when there is so much choice.

Look for key indicators that the hotel you want to book will be suited to your family's needs. A child-friendly pool is always a good sign, as is the availability of cots and high chairs. The majority of hotels in Salou offer interconnecting rooms or family suites, too. If you want to book these, then make your booking well in advance because such rooms may be in limited supply. For those with older children, the availability of kids' clubs and child-friendly discos is also worth looking into. These are fairly common but might only be available during the high season, so check.

Budget hotels, especially those offering full-board and all-inclusive deals, tend to provide buffets. This is good for children since there is a lot of choice available. Salou holidays can also be booked with more formal dining arrangements if preferred.

Are excursions from Salou worth going on?

Salou is a great holiday destination in its own right. As such, you may never want to leave the poolside or the beach. Plenty of people travel there for a fortnight in the sun and never leave until it's time to go home. However, there are plenty of places you can visit, which will often mean getting more out of your time there.

Barcelona

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a culturally vibrant city. Although it takes over an hour to get to and from, the time spent travelling is often worth it. A visit to the world-famous Sagrada Familia and well-kept Park Güell are top picks. Take time to wander the city's main street – La Rambla – too, if you have time. Barcelona has a beach, but you may as well stay in Salou if that's what you want.

Tarragona

Much less far north up the coast from Salou than Barcelona is Tarragona. Full of ancient Roman architecture, part of it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can get there by train in about 20 minutes, which means it is better if you have younger ones with you. The Tarraco Roman Amphitheatre, which overlooks the sea, is a must-see location.

PortAventura World & Ferrari Land

Fun rides, live action shows and water parks are what PortAventura World is all about. Nearby, Ferrari Land offers more thrills with high-speed action. You can purchase a combo ticket, which gives you access to both attractions.

Which airport is best for flights to Salou?

Most people booking Salou holidays will search for services landing at Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), the closest large air hub. Flights to Salou via BCN tend to be a cheap option because there is so much competition. You will need to arrange a transfer from the airport to Salou, however, unless you book a package deal.

Despite Barcelona's popularity as an arrival airport, it is not the only option. Search for cheap flights to Salou via Reus Airport (REU), as well. It is less busy than Barcelona, so it offers fewer opportunities to fly there. However, it is much closer to Salou. It only takes about 15 minutes to travel from there by taxi and about half an hour by bus. The downside for bus travellers is that bus services run about every three hours. However, they're scheduled to coincide with flights.
